Second, one must apply ones self.

Successful people have a developed sense of initiative and are willing to push themselves closer to their idea of success. They often surround themselves with people who have ambitions as monumental as their own. This allows for them to flourish in an environment that is best fit to meet their needs. Throughout my career as a student I feel that I have been extremely effective at this. In high school I participated in the Career and College promise program which allows high school students to take classes at a community college. I used this opportunity to become a CNA. This falls in line with the Metaparadigm Theory (WTC) (see below) we discussed in Evolution of Nursing Science (NURS 212). This theory says that nurses should manipulate the environment in order to put the patient in the best setting possible in order to promote and maximize the reparative process. Students who choose to approach their teachers and actively seek out beyond the class room experiences take advantage of the resources that are at their disposal. This places them in an environment that advocates for their success and allows for optimal growth. These students have decided that they want to step outside of their comfort zone and therefore have Self-selected themselves for opportunities that might not have been offered otherwise.
Self- Selection (WTC) is something we learn about in Introduction to Statistical Reasoning (STAT 110). It is a common bias that arises in any situation in which individuals are able to choose whether or not to participate. This causes a biased sample in any volunteer survey. When the data were being collected for my research project, participants involved were volunteers. This may have led to some degree of volunteer bias. This study was focused on body composition and therefore people who were more comfortable with themselves could have been more willing to participate. Due to this, our findings may not reflect the entire population and could have potentially affected our results. This is considered a limitation of the study. A limitation in regards to research is a characteristic or method used in a research study that may affect the findings or results. We noted this in the discussion section of our poster to ensure that people were aware of this variable.
By definition, Self-selection is the action of putting one’s self forward in the direction of something someone wants to achieve. By manipulating their environment and going to office hours, developing a relationship with their professors, and really expressing how driven they are to go above and beyond what is expected. Students Self-select themselves for a number of opportunities, such as field trips and attending conferences that helps to enhance their college experience and more than likely, helps gain career specific experience. I have been involved in Research Club since my freshman year of college. Joining this student organization was a bit of an accident. I was just trying to get to class early when I walked into their interest day meeting and decided to stay. Since then, I strongly believe that becoming involved in Research Club has made me a better student and person as well as helped put me closer to the goals I have set for myself. Even though getting involved was an accident, I Self-selected myself and continued to attend meetings and become more and more deeply involved. Had I not done so, I would have missed out on a lot of great opportunities some of which I had to work extremely hard for, but others were presented to me simply by my own Self-selection. Through these experiences I have gained knowledge, insight, and wisdom I would have been left without unknowingly. I am positive however, that these skills will benefit me later in my career as a nurse and in my future research efforts.
Since my freshman year I have continuously earned more and more responsibility from the Research Club mentors, Dr. Sellhorst and Dr. Easley. In the beginning I was just apart of the audience and participated in the activities they had provided for us. However, now I am the one who runs the meetings. The night before a meeting a write up a short index card (BTC) that includes everything I need to say. I first announce upcoming activities the Research Club will be hosting and then introduce the speaker by giving a brief background on them and then give a brief description of their presentation. All of this is completely optional and something that I choose to do. I prefer to Self-select myself because then I feel more in control of my future. I also help organize future events and promote them on our Instagram page. We host Instagram take-overs, post about our current research endeavors, as well as our future adventures such as our trip to Germany set for May 2019. In regards to our trip to Germany I have orchestrated multiple fundraisers for club members to participate in to help cut down on the cost of the trip. For example, I set up a Research Club fundraiser with Dominoes Pizza to sell pizza cards and I contacted Kohls to help with a campus-wide clean up that we are planning to hold in May. These are just a few of my many responsibilities as an executive member of the Research Club.
As previously mentioned every research study conducted has limitations. These limitations are just like the ones we put on ourselves when we don’t place ourselves in environments that promote our success. However, we can control our environment and those we surround ourselves with, and therefore should act accordingly.
Everyone, especially students, should be more willing to face hurdles in order to put themselves in the best environment possible. Those hurdles are there for a reason, to be conquered and to learn something from them. This is why we do research. Not because it’s easy, but because we want to benefit others and contribute to world in a way that benefits everyone involved. This is something that nurses encounter on daily basis perhaps due to staff shortages, lack of appropriate supplies, or a patient who refuses treatment. Despite those things, nurses still provide the utmost, best care they possibly can because it is their duty as a healthcare provider.
